What is Microsuction?
Microsuction is a wax removal technique using a precision suction apparatus to suck unwanted or obstructing skin cells and wax from the external auditory meatus (ear canal).
We use surgical lenses (loupes) which provide binocular magnification so that the tip of the fine cannula (suction tube) is always under direct vision.
In comparison with ear syringing where liquid is squirted into the ear to dislodge the wax, Microsuction is a gentler and more precise technique.
The technique means that we can always see what we are doing and can avoid touching the skin of sides of the ear canal, which makes the process a lot more uncomfortable. Occasionally we may need to use other instruments to remove hard wax.
Why is Microsuction better?
Compared with traditional forms of wax removal (ear drops and irrigation or syringing) Microsuction is:
- Cleaner and neater
- Generally better tolerated with fewer side effects
- More effective and likely to need one appointment only
- Doesn’t need weeks of waiting for drops to soften the wax
What to expect from Microsuction
We will talk you through the procedure, show you the equipment and ask you to sign a consent form before we start. The microsuction process can be noisy and can occasionally make you feel dizzy. This usually passes within a few seconds. The procedure can last up to 30 minutes for both ears.
Prior to the Procedure
Please to put 2 drops of olive oil into the relevant ear or ears twice daily for three days prior to your appointment.
If, at the initial consultation and assessment stage we decide we will not be able to help you, there will be no charge.
The fees payable for Microsuction treatment are:
- £40 for one ear
- £60 for two ears
You will be required to pay in full on your first appointment by cash, cheque or card.
If we are unable to complete your treatment on your first visit, you will be offered up to two further appointments, within 4 weeks of your initial consultation, free of charge. It we are unable to complete a successful procedure you will be returned to the care of your GP who can refer you for further specialist help.
If you cancel your appointment within 2 hours or do not attend, you will be charged in full. You will not be able to make another appointment until you have paid for the appointment you missed.
